 | The History of The Craycroft Family From 1297 to 1946 Status: LocatedThis document was "created" in 1946, by John Henry Craycroft. After three years of research, including consulting with other family members, various historical and encyclopedic books, and an export on George Washington, I have concluded that this work, for the period prior to about 1800 is a work of fiction.
The reason for the fiction can only be guessed at. Perhaps it was an attempt to glorify the family history. Unfortunately the truth, as is frequently the case, was better than the fiction. |

 | Transcript of August 13, 1931, letter from Nellie Craycroft Murphy to her daughter Bernice Cobine Status: LocatedNellie had gone to France at the request of the U.S. government in order to identify a grave for her son Maurice who had been killed in the battle of Mont Blanc, France, in 1918. Maurice had been buried shortly after the battle in a marked grave, but when his body was moved to a new cemetery the marker was lost and he was buried in an unmarked grave, as were many others.
The Gold Star mothers of soldiers in unmarked graves were sent to France in order to pick a grave to be considered their sons'. |
